As we have shown in the What is BMI section of this site although a useful tool BMI doesn’t hold all the answers and can also mask some significant health issues.
This is where Tanita’s body composition monitors can prove invaluable. On this page we will look to give a quick overview of how they work and the benefits of their use.
Tanita’s range of Body Composition Monitors only use advanced Bio-electrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) technology. Here we explain a little of how this technology works.
When you stand on a Tanita body composition monitor, your feet will be positioned on the four electrodes. A very low, safe electrical signal will be sent through your feet to your legs and abdomen. In the segmental models, you will also hold 4 electrodes. On these models the signal also passes from your hands, arms and chest to your legs.
The signal passes quickly through the water held in hydrated muscle tissue but meets resistance when it tries to pass through fat tissue. This resistance, also known as 'impedance', is measured and input into medically validated equations that calculate your body composition.
Your body is mainly composed of muscle, fat and water. When you exercise more or start dieting, your body composition will change, even if your weight stays the same. This is why:
When it comes to health monitoring, Tanita is the first choice among experts. Sports coaches, health providers, scientists and global brands know they can trust Tanita to deliver the standard they require. We can do the same for you
With Tanita professional Multi-Frequency Monitors you are also able to measure impedance at several different frequencies. The lower frequencies are used to measure the impedance external to the cell membrane and the higher frequencies are able to penetrate the cell membrane.
By measuring impedance at both the lower and higher frequencies it is possible to estimate extra-cellular water (ECW), intra-cellular water (ICW) and Total Body Water. This information is essential for providing the health status of a person and indicating health risks such as severe dehydration or oedema. The additional frequencies provide a higher level of accuracy compared to single frequency monitors.
As well as being an essential tool for assessing obesity-related health risks, Tanita Body Composition can also be used to support a preventative health program, helping to educate patients about the importance of maintaining healthy fat levels for life-long good health. By understanding what is going on inside their bodies, those with weight-related problems can make better-informed decisions about their behavior. Using an analyser can clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of a treatment program - especially if obesity-related medication is part of the program.
Tanita’s professional range of Body Composition Analysers makes the job of tracking, monitoring and reporting progress easy and effective. As well as Analysers with in-built printers that provide an immediate report of your patient’s current body composition, the professional range includes Analysers that link wirelessly to your computer to provide a more detailed picture. Tanita’s bespoke software (GMON) is designed to help you track your patients’ progress, with graphs and historical comparisons that will help you to provide a clear picture of their health and progress at each stage. This powerful method of reporting will help to motivate them and keep them on track to reach their goal.
Clients who are informed about the importance of body fat loss, rather than just weight loss, are far more likely to stay on a program for longer without loss in enthusiasm – especially when they hit the common ‘weight plateau’. This is because body composition analysis will show an increases in muscle mass and decreases in body fat that doesn’t always manifest in actual weight loss. By understanding why weight loss has slowed down, and by seeing the results in increased healthy muscle mass, clients are less likely to lose motivation. A Tanita Body Composition Analyser will help you to demonstrate the effectiveness of your weight management program and gain the respect and compliance of your clients. If you use the results to explain how their body composition affects their overall health and to set goals; then give them reports that track their progress so they can celebrate their achievements. This will also stand you apart from you competitors and offer additional incentive for you clients to keep coming back.
